When I was a classroom teacher, I was discouraged to find out that a significant percentage of students did not have an understanding of our base ten system. For example, generally they could count by ten starting at 0, but not when you asked them to start counting by ten at another number like 3. What are suggestions for developing an understanding of our number system?

Reading to them on a daily basis, particularly from picture books and engaging them in talk about the pictures and story are still the most effective ways of advancing children's mental development.

What do you suggest parents do with preschoolers or developmentally delayed children that are not ready for decoding?
